THAT CONFOUNDED PAPERWORK!
By Dr. John E. Russell
Why keep books? Why not just "do your own thing" and "go
with the flow?" If you enjoy being self-employed as I do, it is
"your thing" and can be fulfilling--nothing wrong with that, is
it? However, to "go with the flow" without knowing where the
flow is going can lead to bankruptcy.
Reason number one for keeping accurate records: you know
where you stand financially. You can capitalize on what is
making money and correct what is losing money. "How much and
whom do I owe? Who owes me and how much? Have I sent that order
to, uh, um ... you know, I'll never forget old what's-his-name!"
"Let's see, now, did Zap Publications publish my ad, or did I
send it to, er, um, and when did I send it? Where's the
confounded check-book? or did I send a MO, or cash?"
Dread and misery, worry and despair! "Suppose Uncle Sam
decides to audit me? The Infernal Revenue Service better not
come knocking at my door! On the other hand, maybe I'd better
look through those ... honey, what happened to that shoebox I had
on the top shelf in the closet?" Reason number two for keeping
accurate financial records: the IRS requires it.
If you are just starting a business, and are looking for an
easily-understood system, may I recommend one that I have used
for several years? Bernard Kamoroff, a CPA and successful
businessman, has developed an excellent system over a period of
years. His book, SMALL-TIME OPERATOR, includes ledgers for one
year. It will answer many questions of the novice and old pro.
It is recommended by the Small Business Administration, the
National Society of Public Accountants, the American Library
Association, and many other organizations. It is also used as a
textbook in numerous schools and colleges. The cost is very
reasonable and he also has a software program. His address is:
